Safety Tips
General
-
Immediately report all injuries, accidents, incidents, near misses, and
hazardous conditions to your supervisor. Supervisor should then notify the
department of Health and Safety.
-
You may not be discriminated against or disciplined for reporting potentially
hazardous conditions.
-
You may contact the department of Health and Safety for assistance in filling
out workers compensation claims. Contact Matt Humphreys 360-716-5067.
Heat Safety
-
ACCLIMATIZATION:
The human body can adapt to heat exposure to some extent. This physiological
adaptation is called acclimatization. After a period of acclimatization, the
same activity will produce fewer cardiovascular demands. The worker will sweat
more efficiently (causing better evaporative cooling), and thus will more
easily be able to maintain normal body temperatures.
-
FLUID REPLACEMENT:
Cool (50°-60°F) water or any cool liquid (except alcoholic beverages) should be made available to workers to encourage them to drink small amounts frequently, e.g., one cup every 20 minutes. Ample supplies of liquids should be placed close to the work area. Although some commercial replacement drinks contain salt, this is not necessary for acclimatized individuals because most people add enough salt to their summer diets.
-
SLOW DOWN:
On strenuous activity and exercise, especially during the sun's peak hours: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Exercise should be done in the early morning between 4 to 7 a.m.
-
EAT LESS:
Eat less protein and more fruits and vegetables. Protein produces and increases metabolic heat, which causes water loss. Eat small meals, but eat more often. Do not eat salty foods.

Electrical Safety
-
Don’t tie or knot cords. Don’t let furniture sit on cords.
-
Unplug toaster ovens, coffee makers and other small appliances after using them.
-
Don’t plug in too many appliances at once.
